William A. Hawkins III, E’76

hawkinsBill Hawkins is a Senior Advisor for TPG Capital and Corporate Director of Immucor, Inc., a private company, wholly owned by TPG. Immucor is a leading provider of transfusion and transplantation diagnostic products worldwide.

Prior to joining Immucor in 2011, Mr. Hawkins served as Chairman and CEO of Medtronic, one of the world’s largest and most innovative medical technology companies. Mr. Hawkins assumed the role of CEO in 2007 and became Chairman of the Board in 2008. He joined Medtronic in 2002.

Prior to Medtronic, Mr. Hawkins served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Novoste Corp. and held senior leadership positions at American Home Products, Johnson & Johnson, Guidant Corp., and Eli Lilly & Co. He began his medical technology career with Carolina Medical Electronics in 1977.

Mr. Hawkins received his bachelor’s degree in electrical and biomedical engineering from Duke in 1976, where he also conducted medical research in pathology. He then went on to earn an M.B.A. from the Darden School of Business, University of Virginia, in 1982.

Mr. Hawkins is the Chairman and Co Founder of the Medical Device Innovation Consortium (“MDIC”), and past-president of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (“AMIBE”). He serves as a Director on the Board of AdvaMedDX, is the Chairman of the Board for KeraNetics, nContact, and RegenMed TX and on the Board of Thoratec Corporation, a NYSE-listed medical device company.

Mr. Hawkins also serves as a Member of the Advisory Boards at Arboretum Ventures, Radius Ventures, LLC, Accuitive Medical Ventures, A*STAR SERC Cluster Advisory Board in Singapore, and the Biomedical Sciences International Advisory Council, Singapore (“BMS IAC”).

Mr. Hawkins and his wife, Sharon Hawkins, have three children: Elizabeth T’09, Julia T’12, and Will T’14.

Mr. Hawkins was elected to the Duke University Board of Trustees in 2011 and currently serves on the Executive Committee and Audit, Risk and Compliance Committee; he also chairs the Business and Finance Committee.

He was a member of Duke’s Pratt Engineering School Board of Visitors in 2002-2011 and served as chair in 2009-2011; he was appointed as an Adjunct Professor of Engineering at the Pratt School in the fall of 2011. In 2012, Mr. Hawkins was appointed to the Duke University Health System Board of Directors and currently serves on its Audit and Compliance Committee.
