Relief Drive for Animal Shelters

The Weekend Executive MBA Class of 2019 is sponsoring a drive to collect supplies for animal rescues and shelters affected by Hurricane Florence.

Donations will be collected on Sept 28 and Oct 4 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the JB Duke Hotel in the Jeffries Family Meeting Room located at 230 Science Drive.

Donation suggestions include:

  • towels
  • blankets (gently used or new)
  • paper towels
  • laundry detergent
  • Dawn dish soap
  • dog or cat toys
  • treats
  • pet shampoo and conditioner
  • brushes
  • nail clippers
  • crates
  • plastic pet carriers
  • collars and leashes of all sizes
  • beds
  • puppy pads
  • dry or wet food

Please package small or loose items in bags for drop off.

Hurricane Relief: Sign up for Fall Break Volunteer Trips

The message below was sent to students

Dear students,

Many thanks to all of you who have reached out to express your desire to help those in need recover from Hurricane Florence. While Durham was spared from much of the impact of the storm, many communities in North Carolina were not so lucky. Your dedication to supporting our neighbors across the state is wonderful to see.

Plans are coming together for student volunteer trips to Carteret County over Fall Break. Currently, plans are in place for two disaster relief trips, to be held Saturday, October 6, and Sunday, October 7. We have room for approximately 30 students (undergraduate or graduate) per trip. During the trips, students will coordinate with the local Boys and Girls Club on service activities such as yardwork, debris removal, cleaning, painting, or moving furniture and other items. All volunteers will receive orientation and safety instruction.

The deadline to complete your registration is Wednesday, October 3, at 9 a.m. Spaces for volunteers will be assigned on a first come, first served basis, and all volunteers must sign a liability waiver. If the maximum number of volunteer slots for each day is reached before that time, the Qualtrics application survey will close for additional submissions. We are continuing to explore ways to help and will be sure communicate any additional volunteer opportunities as well.

Football Collection Drive Going Strong!

Thank you to everyone who has donated so far to Duke Football’s Collection Drive.

Support Beyu Blue and Beyu Caffe Relief Efforts

Dorian Bolden and his team at Beyu Blue Coffee at Duke University and Beyu Caffe in downtown Durham have announced a program to support our North Carolina neighbors in hurricane relief efforts.

On Thursday, September 20

  • Beyu Blue Coffee will donate 10% of its daily coffee and food sales to hurricane relief efforts
  • At 7 pm, Beyu Caffe will host a Hurricane Relief Concert featuring music artist Regina Gale. 100% of all profits from ticket sales will go towards relief efforts, along with 15% of food and coffee sales that day

Throughout the week, the team will be collecting items at both locations. Items requested are:

  • Canned fruits, vegetables, meat, and soup (pop-top cans and low-sodium a plus!)
  • Whole grain pasta, brown rice, dried beans, and cereal
  • Peanut butter
  • For infants: Pedialyte, infant cereal, diapers and wipes
  • For kids: fruit cups, juice boxes, granola bars, popcorn, and sugar-free pudding cups
  • Non-food essentials: hygiene items, household items, and paper products

Please note: we cannot accept loose jars of baby food (glass or plastic); they would have to be discarded due to health regulations.

All proceeds will go to the Colorfast Hurricane Florence Relief Fund, which was created by local individuals in Durham who have close ties and relationships with individuals living in New Bern, NC. Along with a networks of churches, lodges, neighborhood and alumni associations, these groups are partnering to raise funds and collect supplies that will go directly to folks in the New Bern and Craven County area. 100% of the proceeds will go to these efforts.

Hurricane Matthew Donations

Duke employees can donate money to help the victims of Hurricane Matthew rebuild after the devastating floods via the Doing Good in the Neighborhood employee giving campaign.
